OFF THE BEATEN TRACK: ANOTHER TRIP THROUGH THE FAVORITES
Hello, my Padawans!
It’s Tuesday again, which means it is almost time to fire up the studio, turn on the microphones, load up the music, and head Off the Beaten Track.
I’ll be live tonight at 6 PM Eastern on Jedi Council Radio, and lately I’ve been having a ridiculous amount of fun building these shows around one very simple idea:
Songs I love.
That sounds almost too easy, doesn’t it?
But the more I think about it, the more I realize that some of the best radio shows don’t necessarily need an elaborate theme. Sometimes the theme can simply be, “You need to hear this.”
And that is where we are going again tonight.
MUSIC DOESN’T NEED AN ALGORITHM
One of the things I’ve always loved about doing Off the Beaten Track is that I’m not locked into one genre, one decade, or one particular definition of what belongs on the radio.
There is an enormous amount of wonderful music out there, and sometimes the best song to follow a rock track is an electronic track.
Or funk.
Or New Wave.
Or soul.
Or punk.
Or something atmospheric and strange that sounds like it came through a transmission from another planet.
If it works, it works.
That freedom is one of the reasons I started doing this show in the first place.
I want Off the Beaten Track to sound like somebody who genuinely loves music is sitting on the other side of the speakers saying:
“Wait until you hear this one.”
Not because a computer decided you might like it.
Not because it is trending.
Not because somebody paid to put it in front of you.
Just because it is a damn good song.
FAVORITE SONGS… AND FAVORITE SONGS FROM FAVORITE ARTISTS
The last several shows have given me an excuse to dig through my own musical history.
Some of these songs have been with me for decades. There are tracks connected to particular times, people, places, road trips, radio stations, clubs, memories, and moments in my life.
Others are songs I discovered much later and immediately wondered how I managed to miss them the first time around.
And then there are the deep cuts.
Those are some of my favorites.
You know the ones.
Everybody knows three songs by the band, but buried somewhere on Side Two of an album is a track that makes you think:
Why wasn’t THIS the hit?
Those are perfect Off the Beaten Track songs.
I love being able to play something familiar enough to make you smile and then follow it with something that makes you reach for your phone to find out what the hell DJ Jedi just played.
If I can do both during the same show, I consider that a pretty good night.
YOUR REQUESTS ARE PART OF THE SHOW
I also want to keep reminding everyone that requests are encouraged.
Seriously.
Send them.
One of my favorite things about doing live radio is having somebody request a song that suddenly sends the entire show in a direction I had not planned.
Sometimes one request leads to another song.
Then another.
And suddenly the playlist has wandered completely off the road.
Which, considering the name of the show, seems entirely appropriate.
There are no genre restrictions here.
If you want rock, ask.
If you want something electronic, ask.
If you want an obscure song you haven’t heard since you owned it on cassette, definitely ask.
If I have the music — or it is reasonably easy for me to get — I will always try to work your request into the show.
You are not interrupting the playlist.
You are helping create it.
MORE THAN JUST A WEEKLY SHOW
Something else I’ve been thinking about lately is how much this little weekly ritual has grown.
Off the Beaten Track started with the simple idea of playing music that I wanted people to hear.
But Jedi Council Radio has become more than just a place where I hit PLAY once a week.
It has become part of a much larger creative world for me — radio, DJing, music discovery, writing, videos, social media, and everything else I keep dreaming up.
And every Tuesday gives me a chance to reconnect with the reason I started doing any of this:
I love sharing music with people.
There is still something magical about playing a song and knowing that somewhere on the other side of the stream somebody might be hearing it for the very first time.
Or hearing it for the first time in twenty years.
Or turning it up because it happens to be exactly the song they needed at that moment.
That is radio.
And that is why I keep coming back.
