When the Playlist Starts Talking Back
One of the things I love most about putting together Off the Beaten Track is that I usually do not know exactly where the show is going when I start.
That might sound strange for someone building a radio show, but honestly, that uncertainty is part of the fun.
A lot of the time, I begin by simply looking through my music collection.
I open a folder.
Scroll through some artists.
Spot a song I have not played in a while.
Then suddenly I remember another song that would sound great after it.
That one leads to something else.
Before long, the playlist is not really being built from a strict plan anymore.
It starts talking back.
That is probably the best way I can describe it.
One song creates a mood.
Another song answers it.
A third one changes the direction completely.
And somehow, out of all those little choices, a show starts forming.
That is what Off the Beaten Track has become for me.
It is not about forcing everything into one neat category.
It is about following the music.
Sometimes that means rock.
Sometimes alternative.
Sometimes new wave.
Sometimes something completely unexpected.
And sometimes I rediscover a song I have not heard in years and immediately wonder how I ever let it disappear from regular rotation.
Those moments are some of my favorites.
Music Collections Are Time Machines
The more I dig through my collection, the more I realize that a music library is really a record of your life.
Not in a neat, organized way.
More like a scattered box of memories.
A song can bring back a place.
A person.
A year.
A feeling.
A version of yourself you almost forgot existed.
And then there are songs that do not carry one specific memory at all.
They are just part of you.
You hear the opening notes and think, Yep. Still love this.
That is one of the reasons I enjoy these Tuesday shows so much.
They give me an excuse to revisit all of it.
Not just the obvious songs.
Not just the songs everybody expects.
The ones tucked away a little deeper.
The ones that deserve another spin.
The ones that make me stop scrolling and say, “Oh wow, this one.”
Those are often the songs that end up defining the night.
There Is No Rule Saying Everything Has to Match
One of the things I never wanted Off the Beaten Track to become was a show where everything had to fit into one very narrow box.
There are plenty of places for that.
Sometimes a theme is great.
Sometimes spending several hours inside one genre is exactly what I want to do.
That is especially true with some of the longer Friday broadcasts, where a whole night can revolve around one musical idea.
But Tuesday is different.
Tuesday is allowed to wander.
A song from one decade can sit next to something completely different.
A familiar favorite can lead into a deep cut.
A mellow track can be followed by something loud and completely unapologetic.
If the transition feels right to me, it belongs.
And sometimes even if the transition is weird, that can be fun too.
Music does not always need to behave.
Requests Change Everything
The other part of the show I really enjoy is requests.
A request can be more than just one song.
Sometimes someone asks for something that immediately makes me think of three other songs.
That can shift the direction of the whole set.
And I like that.
It means the show is not happening in a vacuum.
There is a person on the other side of the speakers saying, “Hey, what about this?”
That interaction matters.
So if you are listening and there is something you want to hear, send it my way.
Message me
.
Comment.
Contact me however you normally do.
And if you do not have another way to reach me, you can always email:
I may not be able to fit every request into every show, but I always want to know what
people are listening to and what they want to hear.
Sometimes your song might become the one that changes the entire path of the night.
Behind the Frequency Is Really About This Part
This is exactly why I wanted the blog to be called Behind the Frequency.
Because there is more to radio than the hour when the microphone is on.
There is everything that happens before it.
The searching.
The remembering.
The decisions.
The half-formed ideas.
The moment one song suddenly unlocks the rest of the playlist.
There is the station running in the background.
There are the live sets.
There are Friday theme nights.
There is Staticworks continuing to take shape behind the scenes.
There are creative ideas constantly moving around and colliding with each other.
And there is always more music.
That is the thread running through all of it.
I am still building.
Still experimenting.
Still figuring out what fits.
Still finding songs I forgot I loved.
And honestly, I hope I never completely finish that process.
Because the moment everything becomes too predictable is probably the moment I would stop enjoying it.
So tonight at 6 PM Eastern, I will be back with another Off the Beaten Track: Tuesday Edition on Jedi Council Radio.
I already know some of the songs.
Others may still find their way in before showtime.
And if history is any indication, there will probably be at least one moment where I stumble across something and completely change my plans.
That is part of the adventure.
And that is exactly how I like it.
May the Music Be with You!
