The Signal Is Getting Bigger

5 min read

There are weeks when Tuesday rolls around and I’m thinking mostly about one thing:

What am I going to play tonight?

Then there are weeks like this one, when I look around and realize just how many things have started growing out of this little world I’ve been building.

Off the Beaten Track. Jedi Council Radio. Staticworks. DV8R. The website. The original music.

They started as separate ideas in a lot of ways, but more and more they’re beginning to connect.

And I really like where this is headed.

First Things First: It’s Tuesday

That means Off the Beaten Track: Tuesday Edition is back tonight at 6 PM Eastern.

The philosophy of the show hasn’t changed.

I play music I love.

Sometimes it’s a favorite song. Sometimes it’s a favorite song from a favorite band that somehow never gets played anymore. Sometimes it’s a deep cut. Sometimes it’s something that lands completely out of left field and makes perfect sense once you hear it.

And sometimes one of you sends me a request that changes the direction of the entire show.

I love that.

Requests will always have a place on Off the Beaten Track. As long as I have the music or it’s reasonably easy for me to get it, send your request and let me know what you want to hear.

That unpredictability is part of what makes doing this fun.

But lately, there has been something else happening alongside the radio show.

I’m not just playing music anymore.

I’m making it too.

DV8R Is Moving Forward

Anyone who has followed what I’ve been doing knows that DV8R became much bigger than I originally expected.

The first album, What Comes Through the Static, became a complete project — not simply a collection of songs, but an album with its own identity, artwork, packaging and point of view.

And apparently DV8R wasn’t finished talking.

Because now we’re heading toward album number two: When It All Clears.

That title feels incredibly appropriate for where these newer songs have gone.

There is still anger in DV8R.

There is still frustration.

There are still songs about what happens when life decides to kick the door off its hinges.

But there is also more perspective now.

Songs like “Still Standing,” “Ashes to Crown,” “Built After the Fall,” “Open Hands, Raised Voices,” “No Announcement Needed,” “There Was Always Enough,” and the title track “When It All Clears” look at what happens after everything explodes.

What survived?

What changed?

What did you learn?

And what do you build next?

That has become a huge part of the second album.

And Then I Discovered Something Very Cool…

Sometimes you discover a feature that has apparently been sitting right in front of you and immediately think:

Wait… I can DO that?!

That happened to me with the Jedi Council Radio website.

I discovered that I can upload music directly to the website.

Well, you can probably guess what happened next.

DV8R started moving in. 😂

I have now uploaded some of the newer DV8R songs to the Links page at DJJediRadio.com, which means people can actually go there and hear some of this material for themselves instead of only reading me talk about it.

And that opens up some very interesting possibilities going forward.

The website doesn't have to be only the place where you tune into Jedi Council Radio.

It can become a place where you can explore the other things being created around it too.

And THAT excites me.

Do Me One Favor…

Even if you don't listen to anything else I've uploaded yet, go to the website and find:

DV8R – When It Hits the Fan

Then turn it up.

Preferably louder than is strictly necessary.

And tell me that song doesn’t rock.

Go ahead.

I dare you. 🤘😂

That song has become one of those tracks where I hear it and think, “Yep. THAT is DV8R.”

It has the chaos. It has the explosion. It has that feeling that everything has gone completely sideways and the world is ending — followed by that strange realization that eventually the dust settles.

Things get quiet.

You look around.

You're still standing.

And somehow you start figuring out what comes next.

That idea became important enough that it helped point the way toward the entire second album.

Staticworks Is Becoming the Connection Between All of This

One of the things I've enjoyed most recently is watching Staticworks become more than simply a name attached to projects.

It's becoming the place where all these different creative ideas connect.

Radio production.

Audio.

Visual design.

Original music.

Artwork.

Video.

The DV8R projects.

And whatever strange thing I decide I absolutely need to create next.

There was a time when these would have felt like a bunch of unrelated hobbies.

They don't anymore.

They're becoming pieces of the same creative operation.

And I'm still figuring out exactly how far I want to take it.

That's part of the fun.

So Where Is This All Headed?

More music.

Definitely more DV8R.

When It All Clears will be the second DV8R album, and the music we've created for it

has convinced me that the first album wasn't some one-time experiment.

There is more here.

There are more stories worth telling.

There are more sounds worth chasing.

I also want to keep expanding what you can find through the website. Now that I know I can actually put music there, I can start thinking differently about what DJJediRadio.com can become rather than treating it simply as a way to access the radio stream.

And, of course, Off the Beaten Track isn't going anywhere.

Because before the albums, the graphics, the websites, the production work and all the other madness, there was something very simple underneath all of it:

I really love music.

I love finding it.

I love hearing something that makes me stop what I'm doing.

I love rediscovering songs.

And I especially love sharing those songs with somebody else.

That's still what Tuesday nights are about.

So join me tonight.

Bring me a request.

Maybe discover something you haven't heard before.

And afterward, go poke around the website and listen to what DV8R has been doing.

Especially “When It Hits the Fan.”

Seriously.

That one needs volume.
