Off the Beaten Track — Favorites, Requests and a Tuesday Night Full of Music

Hello, my Padawans!

It is Tuesday, and you know what that means.

At 6:00 PM Eastern tonight, I'll be firing everything up for another edition of Off the Beaten Track with DJ Jedi, and tonight we're doing something that I have really been enjoying lately:

Playing favorites.

Not necessarily the biggest hits.

Not necessarily the songs somebody somewhere decided were supposed to be the important tracks.

Just great songs that I love hearing.

Sometimes that means one of my absolute favorite songs. Sometimes it means a favorite song from one of my favorite bands. Sometimes it's a track I haven't heard in years and suddenly think, Oh yeah... THAT needs to be on the show.

And sometimes it's something that just feels right at that exact moment.

That's one of the things I love so much about Off the Beaten Track. There doesn't have to be a neat little box around the playlist.

🎶 And Requests Are Absolutely Encouraged

I don't want tonight's favorites to be only my favorites.

I want to hear some of yours too.

If there's something you want to hear, let DJ Jedi know!

If I have the music — or if it's reasonably easy for me to get — I'll do my best to honor the request and get it into the show.

And don't worry about whether your request "fits."

That's never really been what Off the Beaten Track is about.

You want classic rock?

Ask.

You want alternative?

Ask.

New Wave? Metal? Funk? Electronic? Progressive rock? Pop? Something weird from 1983 that hasn't crossed your mind in twenty years until five minutes ago?

ASK.

No genre is automatically off limits.

One of my favorite things about doing a show this way is having absolutely no idea where the next request might take us.

We might go from guitars to synthesizers, from something enormous and familiar to a deep cut, and then straight into something that makes absolutely no logical programming sense whatsoever.

And somehow...

it works.

And because so much of it is shuffled, even I don't necessarily know what's coming next.

That's part of the fun.

The more I do this show, the more I realize that one of my favorite parts isn't simply putting together playlists.

It's sharing music.

It's that moment when somebody hears a song they haven't heard forever.

It's somebody requesting something I wouldn't have thought of playing.

It's rediscovering a band.

It's finding a deep cut.

It's hearing a familiar song at exactly the right moment.

And sometimes it's just getting a bunch of people together for a couple of hours and saying:

Here. Listen to this. I love this song.

That's really what tonight's show is about.

Favorites.

Mine.

Yours.

Ours.
