More Than a Radio Show: What’s Been Happening Behind the Scenes
There has been a lot going on behind the scenes lately.
If you only know me from Off the Beaten Track on Tuesday nights, you might not realize just how much has been growing around the show, the station, and all of the creative projects I’ve been working on.
One of the biggest things happening right now is Staticworks.
Staticworks is the creative company I’ve been putting together to bring a lot of what I already do under one roof. Music, radio production, audio, visual work, design, creative projects, and whatever other strange idea happens to wander into my brain at three in the morning all have a place there.
The basic idea behind Staticworks is pretty simple: record, create, transmit.
I want it to be a place where ideas actually become finished things.
That could mean producing a radio show, working on artwork, creating music, editing audio or video, developing a visual identity, or building something completely new. I have always bounced between different creative interests, so instead of trying to separate all of them, Staticworks gives them a home together.
There is still a lot of work to do before everything is completely where I want it to be, but it has been really exciting watching the pieces slowly come together.
And of course, a huge part of all of this is Jedi Council Radio.
Something I sometimes forget to mention is that Jedi Council Radio is not just there when I am doing a live show.
The station broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
There is always music playing.
When I am not live, the station keeps going. And when I do go live, whether it is for Off the Beaten Track or something completely different, I jump into that ongoing stream and take over for a while.
Even some of my DJing inside the game I play gets broadcast live over Jedi Council Radio.
That has become one of my favorite parts of this whole thing.
If I am behind the decks in the game, the people there are hearing the same music that anyone listening to Jedi Council Radio can hear at the same time. It connects this little virtual world I spend time in with the radio station outside of it.
And now I have added Fridays to the regular live broadcasts.
Friday afternoons usually start at around 3 PM Eastern, and depending on the day, I may be broadcasting for five or six hours.
Sometimes I am very animated.
I am talking, joking around, reacting to what is happening, taking requests, and basically treating the whole thing like one long live radio hangout.
Other times?
I let the music do most of the talking.
That is one of the things I like about doing radio this way. Every broadcast does not have to feel exactly the same.
Fridays are especially fun because they usually line up with opening my nightclub inside the game.
That means Friday broadcasts can have their own musical theme.
Last week was grunge night, so the music leaned heavily into the sound of the 1990s — Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, and everything around that world.
This Friday, I am opening things up much wider.
It is going to be rock night.
And when I say rock, I mean I want to travel through as much of the genre as I can.
Classic rock. Hard rock. Alternative rock. Heavy metal. Grunge. Punk influences. Arena rock. Modern rock. Maybe some things that sit right on the edge of all of those categories.
Basically, if it has guitars, attitude, volume, and belongs somewhere in the enormous family tree of rock music, it has a chance of showing up.
That is what I enjoy about putting these nights together.
There is always another song hiding somewhere in the collection.
Sometimes I begin with one track I know I want to play, then I start digging through folders or albums and suddenly remember ten other songs I have not heard in years.
One song leads to another.
Then another.
Before long, I have a five-hour show.
That same process is really how Off the Beaten Track comes together too.
I rarely sit down and say, “Tonight I am going to build a perfectly organized show around one very specific idea.”
Usually I start exploring my music collection.
I find something I love.
Then I find something else.
Eventually a show starts forming around those discoveries.
That is probably the best description of what Off the Beaten Track has always been anyway.
It is music exploration.
Some familiar songs.
Some deep cuts.
Some things you may have forgotten.
Some things you may never have heard before.
And occasionally something that makes absolutely no sense next to the song before it — until somehow it does.
That unpredictability is part of the fun.
Requests are always welcome too.
I genuinely like hearing what other people want to hear because sometimes a request sends the entire show in a direction I never would have planned.
You can contact me however you normally do, and if you do not have another way to reach me, you can always send requests to:
So that is a little bit of what has been happening behind the curtain.
Staticworks continues to grow.
Jedi Council Radio keeps broadcasting 24/7.
Off the Beaten Track continues every Tuesday.
Friday live broadcasts are now becoming another regular part of the schedule.
And somewhere in between all of that, I keep digging through music, finding songs I love, building playlists, experimenting with ideas, and seeing where all of this goes next.
There are still plenty of pieces I am putting together.
But that is part of the fun.
The whole thing is still evolving.
And as long as there is another song to discover, another show to build, or another strange creative idea worth chasing, I am probably going to keep doing exactly that.
May the Music Be with You!
